Buddy Ball
Chavano Rainer Hield, better known as 'Buddy Hield' to NBA fans everywhere, is known for his ability as a microwave scorer and love of the three-point shot. However, Hield does not have the same story of the many NBA players that came before him. He is only one of eight players, including two other active players, in NBA history to come from the Bahamas. It was there that Hield learned how to shoot a basketball, utilizing a homemade basket made out of plywood and a milk crate. That was all part of a pursuit from a young age that Hield was desperately trying to make it in the NBA one day. He played in showcases, that would only come to the Bahamas once a year, for talent evaluators to try and stand out. Eventually that led to Hield moving to the United States, which wasn't the easiest transition. He's been known to love gummy bears, often taking a break from workouts for a quick bite. In some ways, that was the only "American food" that the guard would enjoy. Hield would seek out ingredients for his desired "island flavors" from the stores, in an effort to create the taste of home. Although the transition to America was tough and the journey to the NBA was tougher, in the end, Hield has carved out a nice career in the pros, doing it his way.
