Sometimes the headlines write themselves. Donovan Mitchell was given the nickname "Spida" by a teammate's father, before he made it to the NBA, for his ability to use his long arms to get into passing lanes for steals. It might just be one of the league's best nicknames for a player. Spida Mitchell has grown into NBA stardom and after getting a trade to Cleveland, fans on the east coast will now get to see more of what he can do.
Off the hardwood, Mitchell is a diehard New York Mets fan, thanks to his father, Donovan Mitchell Sr., who is a team executive. It's not a surprise to see the Cavaliers guard talking about baseball on Twitter, or at Citi Field in New York taking in a game. As the story goes, Mitchell was a two sport athlete, but preferred baseball over basketball, however an injury in high school caused him to miss a year of AAU baseball, leading him back to the sport with the big orange ball. If he had not gotten injured, perhaps Spida would've been a superstar on the diamond instead.
