Green Bay Packers – Washington Commanders
A matchup between two of the NFL’s most famous franchises awaits us, and unsurprisingly, this goes way back.
These two sides first met in 1932, Tom Brady would enter the league a few years later, yet, they have still played each other less than 40 times. It seems strange, as these are two of the most successful NFL teams, like ever, with Washington winning three Super Bowls, and Green Bay, four.
The Green Bay Packers hold the edge in the matchup, winning 22 of the first 39 encounters, but Washington fans, you’re comfortably winning the team name change battle. Green Bay have yet to change their name, but, Washington, you’ve had three different names so far, and you’ve also moved locations. Bravo!
Lambeau links
In the history of the NFL, you might be hard pushed to find one figure more closely linked to a franchise, than Curly Lambeau and the Green Bay Packers. The field is named after him, hell, even a leap is named after the great man. Let us drop a knowledge nugget though, after leaving the Packers, and after a brief stop in Chicago, Lambeau had a spell in charge of the Washington franchise.
Alas, perhaps the reason we don’t associate Lambeau with Washington, might be the fact that it didn’t go too swimmingly, and things ended rather abruptly. Following a heated discussion with the then Washington owner, in a hotel lobby, Lambeau was fired, and that was the end of his coaching career.
Another Packers legend, Vince Lombardi, also ended his coaching career with Washington. Spooky.
Monday Night Madness
Monday Night Football is always an event, but in this particular game in 1983, it seems the whole thing was too much for the defences on both teams. Green Bay and Washington combined for an absurd 95 (yes 95) points, in a game the Packers eventually won 48-47, the highest scoring MNF in the history of the NFL. Funny thing is, the Washington kicker missed a field goal as time expired. We could have had even more points!
Rodgers’ Record
Aaron Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the NFL, but he barely has a winning record against Washington, at 4-3. Despite a relatively barren spell for the Commanders overall in recent time, they do have a better than expected record against Rodgers and the Packers, so keep in mind that Green Bay might not be a sure thing, when looking at the betting action.
