What’s in a name? For that matter, what’s in a number?
Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb didn’t go into his first week of Pop Warner football with the name, “CeeDee.” No, Cedarian DeLeon Lamb was making so many spectacular plays that his coach started called him “DVD,” which segued into “CD,” which got stretched out to “CeeDee.”
Lamb wanted to wear No.10 when the Cowboys took him with the 17th pick in the 2020 draft. But Dallas owner Jerry Jones wanted him to wear No.88, in honor of the Cowboys tradition of great wide receivers who have worn the Double Eight (Drew Pearson, Michael Irvin, Dez Bryant) and in deference to one of Jones’ former Arkansas teammates, Jerry Lamb.
Really, it doesn’t matter what we call Lamb or what number he wears. The 6-foot-2, 197-pound wide receiver is poised to have one of the great seasons in team history. Dallas traded former star receiver Amari Cooper to the Browns, making Lamb the No.1 option for QB Dak Prescott.
Lamb is coming off a 79-catch season in which he gained 1,102 yards and scored six touchdowns. Cooper had 68 catchers for 865 yards and eight scores, which means Cedarian Lamb, No.88 on your roster sheet, is looking like a No.1 receiver, which will make him more lion than, well, Lamb.
