It’s arguably one of the most important positions on an NFL team. And often the most neglected.
Backup quarterback.
If we’ve learned one thing over the last few season as more quarterbacks leave the pocket is that every team needs a backup QB who can win games. The Cowboys have opted to put some money where their backup quarterback is.
Dallas retained backup Cooper Rush with a two-year, $5 million deal, including a $1.25 signing bonus. The deal could pay Rush $6 million based on incentives and playing time.
Rush led the Cowboys to a 5-1 record last season after Dak Prescott suffered a broken finger. Without Rush, it’s arguable the Cowboys wouldn’t have made the playoffs.
Credit the San Francisco 49ers for raising the bar on salaries for backup QB’s. They gave Jimmy Garoppolo $7 million to backup Trey Lance. It turned out the 49ers needed all the quality QBs they could get. By the end of the season Lance, Jimmy G and rookie sensation Brock Purdy were all injured.
