It’s amazing how one play can change the course of a player’s career. No one knows this better than Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow. He was a junior at Clemson, a former walkon, when quarterback Deshaun Watson stepped into the huddle and called, “Paw-Right-Wheel-Rope-Crush,” also known as “Orange Crush.”
There was six seconds left in the national championship game against Alabama and Renfrow knew there was a good chance the ball was coming his way. It did. Renfrow made the catch with one second left, giving Clemson the national championship.
Even after the catch, Renfrow was still mistaken for the team’s kicker. He can walk down the strip in Las Vegas and not get noticed. But defensive coordinators around the league have no choice but to notice Renfrow now. He had 103 catches for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns last season for the Raiders.
In June, the former college walk-on signed a two-year, $32 million deal. Before “The Catch,” Renfrow was an unknown. One play. One huge play. And the days of Hunter Renfrow going through life incognito are about to change.
