Out of sight, out of mind.
When Ja’Marr chase opted out of junior season due to COVID-19 concerns, he faded from the public eye. His sophomore season, in which Chase made 84 catches for 1,780 yards and 20 catches became a distant memory. So when the 2021 NFL Draft arrived, some fans were caught up with the Alabama duo of Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle. Not the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Bengals had seen what the 6-foot-1, 204-pound Chase could do. They also had drafted his college quarterback, Joe Burrow, the prior year. They knew Burrow needed go-to receiver.
The choice was obvious. With the fifth pick in 2021 NFL Draft, the Bengals selected Chase and neither team nor player has looked back. In just 29 games Chase has made 168 catches for 2,501 yards and 22 touchdowns. He’s just scratching the surface.
The big question faced Chase and the Bengals is this: Can they reach agreement on a rookie extension? Tyreek Hill is the league’s highest paid receiver at $30 million per season. That’s the benchmark. The suspicion here is that Chase and the Bengals will find a way to make this a completion.
