Jameson Williams is an indictment on the NFL's addiction to speed
Every so often, certain moves show us what NFL decision makers are really thinking. The Lamar Jackson pick would revolutionize how the league would embrace mobile quarterbacks in the post-Vick era. The boom of wide receiver contracts help illuminate how important elite targets are for young passers.
Jameson Williams going 12th overall, despite tearing an ACL in his final college game and missing most of his rookie season, helps show just how important speed is in the NFL.
Williams was a good prospect, but not infallible, and in most year's, not worthy of a lottery pick after suffering such a scary injury. However, Lions brass saw in him what teams cower in fear from when Tyreek Hill is circled on the calendar.
Make no mistake, Williams' supposed 4.2-ish speed is the reason he was drafted so high. In a passing league where stretching the field is the expectation and highlight plays are at an all-time high, Williams is a keeping up with the Joneses kind of selection.
His arrival in motor city could get the engine of their passing offense going and propel their quarterbacks, both present and future, to a new level.
