Edmunds Seeks to Continue Bears Linebacking Tradition
Tremaine Edmunds was seemingly the Bills linebacker of the future. After using the 16th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft on the former Virginia Tech star, Edmunds made 565 tackles in his first four seasons. His combination of size, 6-5, 250, and speed, 4.54, made him a force in the middle. But when the Bills opted not to extend Edmunds, the Bears bounced, signed Edmunds to a monster, four-year, $72 million deal, making him the highest-paid inside linebacker in the NFL.
The Bears needed an alpha linebacker after trading Roquan Smith to the Ravens. Smith signed a five-year, $100 deal with the Ravens. Chicago signed Edmunds and former Eagles linebacker T.J. Edwards. The E&E Boys plan on continuing Chicago’s legacy of great linebackers.
From Mike Ditka to Mike Singletary to Brian Urlacher, the Bears have boasted some of the most tenacious, hard-hitting backers the league has ever seen.
“When you talk about great linebackers — in particular, middle linebackers — I mean, why wouldn’t you want to come to a place like this?” Edmunds told reporters. “It’s such a great tradition.”
